Now in its 132nd year, The Saturday Club of Wayne is pulsing with new members. The philanthropic and social group just inducted its largest “freshmen class” in years, welcoming 25 women into the ranks of active members, which now total 73.

The Saturday Club in Wayne, one of the oldest women’s non-profit organizations in both Pennsylvania and nationwide, announced Wednesday that 25 new members have been inducted for 2018.
This marks the largest class of new members in recent history, the organization said.

Chivalry isn’t dead, and neither are formal manners and ballroom dances. Boys and girls can learn the arts of formal dance and social skills at The Saturday Club’s cotillion program, with six classes on Fridays from October 6 through November 17. On Saturday, Feb. 16 1886, 12 enterprising women who accompanied their husbands to Wayne – where men went to conduct business – met for the first time in Wayne Hall. The number may have been small but their impact was mighty, as the revolutionary group of women began what would eventually be Pennsylvania’s (and perhaps the nation’s) oldest women’s clubs still in operation. The Saturday Club presented its annual philanthropy grants on Tuesday, April 4, to Community Center at Visitation, Greener Partners, Milagro House (Lancaster), Paws and Affection, and The Parkesburg Point Youth Center. The funds, which were raised via campaigns and projects throughout 2016 and 2017, will be used to establish and enhance programs while providing key assistance to the organizations, which support women, children and families in the Greater Philadelphia region.
