Throughout the month of February, members of The Saturday Club collected nearly 1,000 books to help WePAC – a nonprofit organization that promotes childhood literacy by engaging volunteers in Philadelphia public schools through re-opening and staffing libraries, and providing academic mentoring – reach their goal of expanding to 20 libraries by 2020. At the conclusion of the book drive, volunteers sorted and barcoded the books to prepare them for WePAC’s libraries. WePAC is the only nonprofit in Philadelphia systematically working to open previously closed school libraries. The organization currently has 14 libraries open, and are in the process of opening a 15th. The organization opens and staffs these volunteer-run libraries in Philadelphia public elementary schools with the vision that every Philadelphia student will be empowered with the literacy skills vital to both succeed and help the community prosper.
